A Series on International Criminal Justice Roundtables: Judicial Researchers and Actors

This series consists of international roundtables between young doctorate students and young actors from the judicial world, with their discussions moderated by researchers. The aim is to establish dialogue between the world of research and judicial practice, with a view to mutual enrichment, as well as to contribute to the visibility and dissemination of research on international criminal law by young people in the French language.

Second international roundtable

As part of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Tutsi genocide, this second edition of the roundtable will focus on Thimotée Brunet-Lefevre’s thesis entitled: "French justice facing the genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda : the trials of Octavien Ngenzi and Tito Barahira at the « Cour d’assises » of Paris.".

It will take place on Tuesday June 11, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the IERDJ (47bis rue des Vinaigriers, 75010 Paris). Online participation is possible. Interpretation in French and English will be provided.

• Timothée Brunet-Lefevre, author of a thesis on « French justice facing the genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda : the trials of Octavien Ngenzi and Tito Barahira at the « Cour d’assises » of Paris ».
• Sophie Havard, Head of the Crimes against Humanity, War Crimes and Offences Unit of the French National Counterterrorism Prosecutor’s Office.

A look back at the first international meeting

The first meeting has been organized around the work of Jérémy Hall, whose thesis is entitled L’appréciation de la preuve devant la Cour pénale internationale. Published in 2021, it received a Joinet Thesis Award.

This meeting will take place online:

• On Thursday, 17 October 2023 from 18:00 to 19:30.

Speakers

• Jérémy Hall, author of a thesis entitled L’appréciation des preuves devant la Cour pénale internationale. After teaching for several years at the Université Grenoble Alpes, he is currently a legal expert assisting a magistrate in the Social Affairs Chamber of the Grenoble Court of Appeal.

• Nicolas Guillou, currently working as a pre-trial judge at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and French candidate for the election of judges at the International Criminal Court. He was Head of the Office of the President of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon from 2015 to 2019 and one of nine independent experts working on the Independent Expert Review of the International Criminal Court in 2020. He also worked on the Ethica project towards a common code of ethics for international criminal judges in 2023. Now a French magistrate, he began his career as an investigating magistrate and carried out his duties as a criminal law adviser and diplomatic adviser at the Ministry of Justice. He was also a liaison magistrate in the United States.
