Legalization procedure in English

Documents to be legalized for foreign authorities have to be authentic.
Contact us at bureau.legalisation chez diplomatie.gouv.fr and attach your document to your email so that we can help you.

Once we have confirmed the document’s authenticity, and if the consulate requires a translation authenticated by our services, you need to :

• Use only a sworn translator attached to a French Court of Appeal, working from the original authenticated document
• Provide the translator with the original document (no scanned documents by email or photocopies).

Both documents should bear : the stamp and original signature of the translator, and the same translation number.

As translators are not qualified to provide notarial services, their signature on the translation must be certified (at a town hall, if the translator attends in person, or by a chamber of commerce).
Both documents should be provided to us (the original and the sworn translation), even if only one is to be legalized.

Legalization procedures can be carried out by post.

The procedure is as follows :

Please provide :

• A covering letter providing your contact details (address, telephone number and email) and mentioning the country requiring the documents ;
• The authentic documents (we do not keep copies) ;
• A cheque made out to the « Régie des Légalisations (DFAE) » or bank transfer evidence. Fee (per document, not per page) : €10 for a document of any type ;
• A stamped self-addressed envelope to return the documents (from abroad, you can print your stamps from the La Poste website).
